Hard Mode Wordle: Constraining Guesses Around a Green I
TL;DR: Hard mode means every guess must use all greens in place and all yellows somewhere. A green I in slot 3 is not optional. You cannot “take a break” with STARE. Your remaining universe is the middle-I list minus greys, with yellows placed off dead chairs. Smaller universe, louder mistakes, fewer tourist guesses.
The legal set is not the pretty set
Pretty words that drop a yellow are illegal. The game will reject them, or, if you somehow bypass, you still cheated the mode you chose. Choose easy if you want tourist guesses. Hard is a contract. The contract is why a middle-I list becomes the whole dictionary that matters.
Scan middle-I words with your finger on the yellows: each candidate must contain them. If you cannot see the yellow in the candidate, skip. Skipping is the skill. Reading 400 words without skipping is a museum visit during a fire.
Yellow placement is the remaining puzzle
Green I occupies chair 3. Yellow S cannot sit in 3, cannot sit where S was grey, must sit in an open chair. That is four chairs minus corpses. Write the chairs. Then the list is short. If it is not short, a yellow is not actually required in your head yet—re-read the grid. Hard mode yellows are required in the next guess, not “sometime.” Sometime is easy mode.
Two yellows can make the set tiny. Tiny is kind. Tiny also means cousin hell (SWIRL/TWIRL). Distinguish on the next guess if more than one guess remains. If one remains, pick. Hard mode does not add a seventh guess because the set was mean.
Information guesses that still obey
You can still maximize new letters if the word stays legal. A legal information guess is a middle-I word that includes yellows and tests a new consonant. An illegal information guess is CRANE. Grief over not playing CRANE is nostalgia. Nostalgia is not a third mode.
If no legal word tests a new letter, you are in finishing. Finish. Do not pass. There is no pass. Play a legal candidate even if it teaches nothing but yes/no on a cousin. Yes/no is information when the set is two.
Grey discipline
Hard mode does not force you to avoid greys—greens and yellows are the force. You still should avoid greys because repeating a grey wastes the guess inside a small set. Repeating a grey that is also not a yellow is legal and stupid. Legal-stupid is how people “stay in hard mode” and still lose. Mode is a floor, not a brain.
If a letter is grey, delete every list line that contains it, unless duplicate-letter rules say a second copy might live. Duplicate rules are the only exception. When unsure, look at how many of that letter you already placed. Over-delete is a classic hard-mode suicide on doubles (CHILL).
Emotional management
Hard mode feels unfair when the set is 50/50. It is fair; it is small. The unfairness was choosing hard. You can choose easy tomorrow. Today, write the two words, pick, live. Rage-typing a third cousin that is illegal will bounce. Bounces cost time and dignity, not guesses, unless you fat-finger a legal wrong cousin. Fat-finger is the real extra difficulty on phones.
Screenshot the grid before the list so yellows do not evaporate. Evaporated yellows produce illegal starters from memory. Memory is easy mode’s friend and hard mode’s liar.
Practice specifically in hard
Play yesterday’s puzzle in hard after you know the answer, not to spoil, but to force legal paths. Stop before the last guess if you only wanted the constraint feeling. Or go to a middle-I list and deal four yellows as a drill. Drills teach vetoes. Blank-board hard mode on random days teaches openers you will not use after a green I. Drill the locked-I world if that is the world you keep meeting.
If you never meet green-center I, this article is still the template for any locked slot. Replace I with whatever green you got. The list would change. The contract would not.
Locking yourself out
Hard mode can lock you into a family with no distinguishing guess left that is legal. That is a designed risk. You accepted it. The workaround is distinguishing earlier, while two guesses remained. If you already used those guesses on legal but non-distinguishing fives, the coin flip is earned. Do not switch to easy mid-puzzle unless the product allows and you are honest that you left the contract. Switching secretly is a statistic you will lie about later. Lie-free logs are how you improve. Coin flips belong in the log as coin flips, not as “hard mode is broken.”
Practice lockouts on paper: give yourself SWIRL/TWIRL and one guess. Feel it. Then you will distinguish on guess four next time. Feeling it once is cheaper than six public losses with the same cousins.
