Lock portrait or landscape and stick with it. Filter before you scroll. Do not let autocomplete submit a six-letter cousin. Middle-I is five glyphs. The sixth glyph is how you lose a round while “being efficient.”

One screen, two jobs

Split: puzzle app on top, list on bottom, if your phone can. If it cannot, screenshot the grid (colors included) so you can flip to the list without holding five letters in working memory. Working memory drops the greys first. Greys are the ones you needed. A screenshot is a grey museum. Take it before you open the list.

If you only flip without a screenshot, say the mask aloud: “blank, blank, I, grey-A, S.” Speech is cheaper than a wrong guess. People look weird on a bus. They also finish puzzles.

Scroll physics

Long lists on mobile browsers rubber-band and lose your place. Search two letters instead of flicking 200 lines. If you must flick, use the first-letter jump if the page has anchors. If it does not, type the first letter in find-on-page. Find-on-page that highlights I in every paragraph is a trap—skip to the list region. Some browsers count “I” in “in the middle” 40 times before the first word. You will think the tool is empty. It is verbose.

The middle-I page is the list. Bookmark it. Do not search “middle I words” in a fresh tab every day; ads will insert a different list with IRATE in it. Bookmarks are a ruleset.

Fat fingers and cousins

TWIRL and SWIRL are adjacent on a keyboard in spirit if not in QWERTY. Autocomplete may offer TWIRL when you typed TWIR. Accepting it without looking at slot 1 is a classic. Look at slot 1. Then submit. Submit is irreversible in some apps. Irreversible plus autocomplete is a prank.

Disable autocorrect in the puzzle app if it exists. Keep it in Messages. Different fields, different laws. A puzzle field with autocorrect is a hostile environment for WHISK.

Dark mode, contrast, and green vs yellow

Some themes make yellow look green at 40% brightness. If you misread yellow I as green I, you will live in a middle-I list that the puzzle did not authorize. Raise brightness for the grid, not necessarily for the list. The list is black text. The grid is the color instrument. Misread color is not a vocabulary problem.

Colorblind modes: know which shape means “here” vs “somewhere.” If “here” is slot 3, you are in this article. If “somewhere,” leave this list. The list cannot see your shapes. You must.

Data, battery, and offline

A cached page of the list is a tournament friend. Load it on Wi-Fi. If the page is search-driven and empty without JS, you need the JS. Test airplane mode once before you need it. If airplane mode shows a blank, print the twelve-word drill, not the 400-word dump, as a fallback. Twelve on paper beats a spinner at 1%.

Do not paste the whole list into Notes as a daily ritual; you will stop filtering and start linear reading on a 3-inch column. Notes is for the three survivors. The long list stays in the browser with a filter. Roles. If Notes holds 400 words, you built a worse website.

Notifications as random greys

A banner that covers slot 3 while you screenshot will crop the I. You will later remember a four-letter pattern. Dismiss banners. Then screenshot. Then filter. Order matters. A cropped I is how you accidentally use a contains-I list in your head. The middle was under a Slack notification. Slack is not a letter.

If you play in bed, landscape can hide the submit control under a home bar. Rotate, tap, rotate back if you must. A missed submit that double-sends is a different disaster. Watch the guess count after each send. Count is the only truth; the animation can lie if you double-tapped.

Split-screen with a list that reflows

Resize the list pane until you see at least eight words without scrolling. If you only see two, you will forget the third survivor. Eight is a working set. Two is a slot machine. If split-screen shrinks type below 12px, abandon split and use the screenshot method. Tiny type makes TWIRL and SWIRL into the same smudge. Smudges are not letters. Letters need strokes you can tell apart at arm’s length.

Haptic keyboards that buzz on every letter can make you skip slot 5. If you buzz-count to four and submit, you sent a four-letter word into a five-letter hole. Turn haptics off for the puzzle or watch the five boxes fill before send. Boxes are the count. Buzzes are entertainment.

TL;DR: On a phone, the list is long, the keyboard is fat, and the grid is in another tab.
