The pile is a cue, not a teleprompter you read aloud in order. If the house rule is “from your head,” leave the phone in another room. If the house rule is “any aid,” pass the list around like a dictionary. Rules first, list second.

Name the constraint out loud

“Five letters, third letter I, no proper nouns, 60 seconds.” If you skip any clause, someone will shout PIZZA (I in 2) or PARIS (maybe banned) or RADIO (I in 4). The argument will last longer than the round. Write the constraint on a napkin. Napkins are referees. Phones are temptations.

If the constraint is only “contains I,” this site’s list is too strict and will make you lose to IRATE. Use a contains-I list then. Strict lists on loose rules are self-owns.

When the list is fair

Fair: everyone may glance, or nobody may. Unfair: one person has the bookmark. If you host, print one page or none. A printed page of middle-I fives is a party artifact. A secret laptop is a different game called “I googled.” Google games should be announced. Announced googling can still be fun. Secret googling is how friendships learn new adjectives.

The middle-I finder is a fine shared screen on the TV. Shared is the word. Zoom the type. If people cannot read from the sofa, it is not shared; it is a host advantage.

Games that actually benefit

Scatter-style categories: “five-letter I-middle.” Password-style clues to a middle-I word. Banagrams with a house mission. Not: a serious Scrabble rating game (lookup may be illegal). Not: a live daily Wordle if the group wanted to solve together from zero. Using a full answer list on a live daily is spoiling, not partying. Use a practice constraint, not today’s public answer.

Kids: shorter timer, allowed list, no shame. Adults who claim they don’t need the list should still obey the napkin on PIZZA. Ego is not a slot.

Scoring without tears

One point per valid word, minus one for pattern breaks. Cap at 10 so the list-reader cannot dump 40. Caps keep the list from being a firehose. If there is no cap, the list-reader wins by literacy of scrolling, not by wit. Wit was the point of a party. Adjust scoring until wit wins.

Disputes: dictionary on the table. If the dictionary has the word and the pattern holds, it scores. If Wordle would ban it, that is irrelevant unless the napkin said Wordle-legal. Napkin. Always napkin.

Alcohol, noise, and slot counting

People miscount slots when loud. Have a caller spell the word with five fingers. Finger three is I or it is out. This looks silly and prevents RADIO. Silly is cheaper than a 15-minute rules trial. If someone is angry about fingers, they wanted a different game. Play that game next round. This round still has fingers.

Do not mix “I in the middle of the pronunciation” with slot 3. Pronunciation fights are infinite. Slots are five. Infinite is bad at 11 p.m.

Afterparty lists

Do not text the live daily answer in the party chat titled “fun words.” Title it “constraint list” and keep today’s daily out. Someone in the chat has not played. Spoilers travel faster than good nights. A constraint list can live in the chat. A daily string should wait. If you must share a funny miss (PIZZA), share the miss, not the answer to a different product.

If the party invents a new constraint (middle O, four letters), this list will not help. That is healthy. Tools should sometimes sit down. Sitting down is how you know it was a party, not a website demo.

Team relay with one list

Relay: thirty seconds each, same napkin, same shared screen, no repeat words. Repeats are on a strike list on the napkin. The list on the TV is a well; the strike list is the well’s lid. Without a lid, the second player rereads line one. Relay dies of rereading. Assign a striker who only writes used words, does not play. Striker is a job. Jobs keep parties from becoming parallel scrolling. Parallel scrolling is four people on four phones, which is a commute, not a relay.

If someone cannot see the TV, they play from memory plus napkin, which is a handicap. Move them. Do not call it fairness while they face a wall. Furniture is part of game design. So is font size. So is saying PIZZA is out before round one, not after someone scored it and ate a snack on the point.

Prizes that do not require the answer to a daily

Prize: chocolate for most valid unique fives. Not: “first to say today’s Wordle.” Mixing a public daily into a prize is how you bribe spoilers. Keep prizes on the napkin constraint. If someone solves the daily later, that is another game with no chocolate. Chocolate is for the constraint. The daily is for the commute home. Two games, two ledgers. Ledgers keep friendships. Friendships do not need a green I more than they need a clean chat.

TL;DR: Party games that ask for words with a pattern (middle vowel, five letters, no names) go faster with a pre-filtered pile.
