It is not a race through a 400-word website. Ten words, said slowly, boxed, checked. If the student hears I and writes it in box 2, the drill worked: you found the error. That error is the whole point. The website is a word bank, not the worksheet.

Boxes beat lined paper

Lined paper hides slots. Five boxes make slot 3 a place. Write I in box 3 before dictation if the skill is “the rest of the letters.” Leave box 3 empty if the skill is “find the middle vowel.” Those are different skills. Label the worksheet. Unlabeled worksheets produce PIZZA from a picture of a daisy because the student heard a famous word. Famous is not DAISY’s slot map. DAISY’s slot map is D-A-I-S-Y.

Say the word, then say the five letters if the student is early. Later, only the word. Later still, only the picture. Scaffold down. Do not scaffold into a phone scroll.

What to pick from the bank

Pick words the student can read in another context. DRINK is better than REIFY for most seven-year-olds. Academic lists wait. If you need academic, see the vocabulary article. This article is slots. Slots want decodable pieces: short I, known consonants. THIGH is a gh surprise; save it. CHILL is a double L; introduce on purpose, not by accident in a mixed ten.

Use the middle-I list as a teacher bank on Sunday. Copy ten onto paper. Monday’s kids never need the URL. URLs become games. Games steal the boxes.

Dictation errors that mean something

I in box 2: they heard the first vowel. Extra letter: they are not counting five. Missing letter: they collapsed a blend. Wrong cousin (TWIRL/SWIRL): they need minimal pairs, not a longer list. Longer lists increase cousins. Minimal pairs decrease them. Two words, same lesson, louder difference. Ten random middles is a fog. Fog is not a drill.

If they add a sixth letter, they are inflecting (-s, -ed). Thank them for grammar, then point at five boxes. Grammar can wait one line. The boxes cannot.

Sound versus letter

Long I (DAISY, I as /aɪ/) and short I (DRINK, /ɪ/) both write I in English. The drill is letters, not IPA, unless you are in a phonics block that wants the sound. If you mix “say the short I” with DAISY, you created a trap. Separate days: short I middles, long I middles. The pattern slot 3 = I can host both sounds. Both sounds should not host the same oral prompt on day one.

Y as a vowel in slot 5 (DAISY) is a second lesson. Do not grade Y as “wrong I.” Y is doing vowel work at the end. Praise it, then still count five.

Group game without spoilers

Teams build a word in boxes on the board, slot 3 locked I. Timer 20 seconds. No phones. The bank stays with you. You whisper a word or show a picture. If a team yells a seven-letter cousin, they spent the clock. Clock is the teacher. You are the bank. The list is not a player.

Do not use today’s public daily as the picture. Someone’s parent is playing later. School drills should be evergreen: daisy, brick, drink. Evergreen is ethics. Ethics is a filter like greys. Apply it.

Assessment is five boxes, not a printout of 400

A 400-word printout measures scrolling and font size. A five-word exit ticket measures the skill. If they can box DAISY and DRINK and reject PIZZA with a reason (“I is in box 2”), they passed the pattern. If they can recite 40 words and still put I in box 2, they passed a memory test and failed the pattern. Grade the pattern if that is what you taught. Memory tests are another column. Two columns again. Two columns keep Wordle Twitter out of the gradebook.

Send home four boxes drawn, I in the middle, not a link. Links become unsupervised games. Games are fine after the boxes are honest. Honest boxes are the homework. The finder is your prep, not their 8 p.m. spiral.

Do not grade speed

A child who boxes slowly and correctly beat a child who scribbles WHISK and smiles. Speed is a party metric. School is a slot metric. If you time them, they will guess. Guesses are Wordle. Wordle is after homework. Homework is boxes. If a parent asks for more speed, give more dictation tomorrow, not a stopwatch today. Stopwatches import a game you said you were not playing. You said it in the ethics line. Keep the sentence. The sentence is a drill for you. Teachers need drills too. Your drill is not opening the 400-line page on the projector. Projectors make warehouses look like lessons. Lessons are ten words. Ten words are a number you can love. Love is not a rubric. Rubrics are five boxes filled. Filled boxes are enough. Enough is a complete curriculum for this skill. Anything else is a club. Clubs after 3 p.m. Projector then, maybe. Maybe still ten words. Ten is a habit. Habits beat websites. Websites wait. Waiting is a pedagogy. Pedagogy is this paragraph’s only prefix, and it is not un-. It is wait-.

TL;DR: A spelling drill for “vowel in box 3” is five boxes on paper, I already written, student fills the rest from dictation or from a picture.
