Use a short academic slice: PRISM, IDIOM is I in 1, CIVIC is not slot 3. Build ten teachable fives that appear in science/arts, still I in box 3. Then teach the meaning. Slots first, gloss second. A 400-line finder is too wide for a vocabulary week.

Pick words that survive a gloss

PRISM: science. STAIN: lab and laundry. GRIND: lab mill or daily grind. UNITY: social studies. These can carry a sentence. REIFY can wait for a philosophy elective. If you cannot write a twelve-word student sentence, it is not this week’s academic word. It can still be a Wordle word. Academic lists are for meaning plus slots, not for rarities.

Confirm slot 3 on the board in front of them. Academic pride does not move I. LIMIT will sneak in because it looks scholarly. Count. LIMIT is out for this filter. Out is a lesson in precision, which is academic. Precision is the hidden standard.

Ten, not four hundred

A week of ten words with boxes, gloss, and a sentence beats a printout. Printouts become coloring. Coloring is not vocab. If an administrator wants “exposure,” expose ten deeply. Exposure to 400 unread lines is a PDF, not a curriculum. PDFs do not sit in student sentences. Sentences do.

Pull candidates from the middle-I bank on Sunday, then kill any you cannot gloss. The kill is the academic act. The bank is only a net. Nets catch boots. Throw the boots back.

Science, arts, civics—separate piles

Do not mix PRISM and a music TWIRL in one quiz if you promised a science week. Mixing trains “weird five-letter words” as a category, which is a Wordle category. Academic weeks should be topical. Topical plus slots is a dual objective. Dual is enough. Triple (plus Wordle meta) is a circus. Circuses belong in clubs, not in the lab grade.

If a science word is six letters, it does not get surgery to fit five. You do not owe the finder a sacrifice. Teach the six-letter word in its own unit. The finder is optional equipment. Optional equipment can sit in the cabinet while you teach “crystal.” Cabinet is a good place for a website during a lab.

Assessment

Three boxes: spell in five cells, short gloss, use in a sentence. If they gloss PRISM and spell it with I in 2, they get gloss points and lose slot points if that was the standard. Tell them the standard. Hidden slot standards are Wordle in a trench coat. Trench coats confuse parents. Parents should see “we also count letters.” Counting letters is literacy. Literacy is allowed in science. Allowed, not required every week. Every week would steal the lab. Once a quarter is a seasoning. Seasoning is not a stew.

Do not test yesterday’s public daily. Ethics. Academic integrity includes not spoiling a family puzzle. Use PRISM in March even if a puzzle used it in March. If collision happens, skip. Skipping is integrity. Integrity is more academic than a website word.

Multilingual classes

Cognates may place I differently. Do not assume a Spanish cousin is five English letters with I in 3. Count the English lemma you are teaching. If the cognate helps meaning, use it in the gloss column, not in the boxes. Boxes are English orthography for this course unless you said otherwise. Otherwise should be written. Written otherwise is a bilingual program. Unwritten otherwise is a mess in slot 3.

Names of scientists are often not five or not middle-I. Do not force Curie into five boxes. Force is how academic lists become jokes. Jokes reduce PRISM. Protect PRISM. Let names live on a timeline, not on a Wordle-shaped worksheet.

The honest sales pitch to students

Say: “We are stealing a game shape to make spelling visible. We are not playing the daily.” If you pretend it is not a game shape, they will still hunt today’s answer. Hunt is a side quest. Side quests eat the gloss. Name the shape, cap the time, return to meaning. Meaning is why we said academic. If meaning never appears, it was a Wordle club with bigger words. Clubs are fine after school. After school can use the party article. During school, gloss the prism, box the I, go measure something that is not a letter.

Do not harvest from the daily

If PRISM was yesterday’s public answer, skip it this week even if it is perfect science. Perfect is not ethics. Ethics is a different gloss: we do not steal a family’s leftover puzzle to look rigorous. Rigorous is a sentence about light. Light is a lab. Labs can use a triangular block without the five-letter celebrity. Celebrities rotate. Rotation is a calendar. Calendars are a privacy of other people’s games. Other people include your students’ parents. Parents are a stakeholder. Stakeholders do not need a spoiler in a packet. Packets can say “a glass triangle that splits light” and delay the spelling until next month. Delay is academic. Academic is not first-to-the-internet. Internet is a finder. Finders wait in the cabinet. Cabinets are a morphology of rooms. Rooms are where gloss happens. Gloss happens with a block in a hand, not with a URL in a packet titled March 12. March 12 might be a daily. Dailies are nuclear. Nuclear stays out of packets. Packets stay boring. Boring packets are a love letter to families. Love letters do not include five-letter keys. Keys stay in games. Games stay at home if they are dailies. Home is allowed. School is PRISM in April, maybe. Maybe is a professional word. Use it.

TL;DR: Academic five-letter middle-I words (PRISM, IONIC if I-O-N-I-C wait IONIC is 5, I in 1; LIMIT is I in 2) need a dictionary check, not a vibe.
